Workload: 0 up to 25 hours per week of direct instruction, as and when required, to a maximum of 30 assigned days in the appointment period (hours worked reported on timesheets).

Duties: Instruct in all aspects of theory and practical skills required for the Carpentry / Framer Technician Program. Ensure program standards are maintained, prepare and develop courses as appropriate, maintain and submit student evaluation and grading. Work in a team approach to deliver both classroom and practical objectives in a shop operations while promoting safety standards as a priority.
  Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success through ongoing professional training, subject currency, and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and department committees; meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications: Carpentry Interprovincial Trade Qualification plus a minimum of five years recent, proven journeyman status working on a broad range of building projects. Provincial Instructor's Diploma or equivalent (if in progress, must be complted within 2 years of hire). Proven participation in trade-related professional development relating to new technologies, new industry/instructional developments and trends, and supervisory experience. Proven ability in classroom management. Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential. Proven positive interpersonal skills in dealing with students. Sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of students, including young students continuing their education and mature students returning to education. Ability to work as part of a team comprised of instructors, administrators and support staff. Familiarity with computer applications appropriate to an educational setting. The successful applicant will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Valid OFA Level 2 Certificate required.

Preferred Qualifications: Three to five years demonstrated teaching or industry training experience or appropriate combination of above. Some supervisory experience in the residential construction industry.
