Workload: 0 up to 25 hours per week of direct instruction, as required, plus vacation relief (timesheets required). Alternate workweek schedule in place for delivery of instruction.

  This intensive hands-on program provides training in the operation of heavy equipment, routine maintenance of machinery, and the practical field operations of excavating, land clearing, grading, and road building. The Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) programs are cost recovery and the seats must be filled to make the program successful.
 
Duties: Teach all aspects of the theory and practical skills required to operate and maintain heavy equipment. Ensure program standards are maintained. Some student evaluation and grading will be required. Work in a team approach to deliver both classroom and practical objectives for clients throughout BC.
 
  Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success through ongoing professional training, subject currency, and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and department committees; meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
 
Required Qualifications: Minimum of five years recent directly related industrial experience working in the trade as a Heavy Equipment Operator. Provincial Instructor Diploma (if in progress, must be completed within 2 years of hire). Ability to operate and maintain three to four pieces of Heavy Equipment customarily used in Civic Heavy Construction. Knowledge of current WorkSafeBC regulations and BC Construction 'Best Practices'. Familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults. Excellent communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential. Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles. Minimum Level 1 First Aid.
 
Must possess a valid Class 1 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults. Supervisory experience.
