CUPE CASUAL 1|
Article 18.09 of the Collective Agreement states, "Where vacation relief is required, the Employer shall attempt, where practical, to give regular employees the opportunity to substitute in higher paying positions and arrange for staff replacements at the lowest paying category." If, during the upcoming fiscal year, you are interested in being considered for any opportunities to substitute in higher paying positions where relief is required due to scheduled vacation, you must apply to this posting by midnight on the closing date.
Your resume should clearly indicate the position(s) for which you wish to be considered, detailing the qualifications and experience which warrant eligibility to fill the position(s) indicated. Human Resources will consult with the immediate supervisor(s) of the position(s) indicated to ascertain if, based on the information provided in the resume, the qualifications necessary for the position(s) identified are met. You will be advised, in writing, of this review. If it is determined you meet the qualifications, the supervisor will be advised that you are to be offered the opportunity to substitute, where practical, when relief for scheduled vacation is required and not filled by means of substitution from within the department or by the recall of CUPE employees on layoff, prior to extending an offer of employment elsewhere. When relief is required for scheduled vacation, the supervisor will make the initial contact with you concerning dates and details. It is then your responsibility to obtain written approval (i.e., Request for Leave form) from the supervisor of your regular position to be released in order to accept the temporary substitution assignment.
In situations where more than one qualified CUPE employee from outside the department has recorded an interest in a particular assignment, offers will be extended on the basis of seniority.
In order to assist in identifying positions which may be of interest to you, copies of current Joint Job Evaluation results are available to current employees (capitan login required) at https://isweb.viu.ca/comm_viewer/ in the Human Resources/CUPE JJE secton.
