Toolroom Attendant, Welding - Posting Period Extended

Duties: Maintain, issue, and receive tools, equipment, and supplies to students and instructors. Repair and maintain tools and equipment. Troubleshoot, assess, and correct equipment problems arising in the welding area.

Determine requirements and maintain an uninterrupted supply of materials and consumables. Meet with suppliers and manufacturers' representatives to obtain specifications and prices on equipment and supplies. Repair welding equipment for all the Trades and Applied Technology Departments. Answer telephone inquiries. Relay messages to instructors.
 
  Auxiliary appointment as and when required for our Welding program.
 
Required Qualifications: Grade 12 plus Level C welding certification. Three to five years recent relevant experience. A good knowledge of the welding trade, their supply and equipment requirements and operation of machine tools. Knowledge of the electrical field together with the care and use of a broad range of hand tools. Knowledge and skill to repair grinders, drills, saws and other electrical tools as well as all the welding equipment in the shop. Understanding and sensitivity to the adult learner. Must successfully complete the VIU forklift operators training program within 2 months. Working knowledge of WHMIS regulations. Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications appropriate to Tool Room operation and inventory. Good interpersonal skills in dealing with students, instructors and suppliers. This position necessitates exposure to many adverse and undesirable conditions, which require safety equipment or precautions to be followed closely. Safety footwear and protective eyewear is required in the shop.
 
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Valid OFA Level 2 Certificate required (or obtain as per CUPE Letter of Agreement #3).
