Cashier/Clerk Bookstore - Cowichan

Workload: 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Additional hours when required to be submitted on timesheets.

Duties: Daily cashiering, sales, customer service, product display and merchandising. Encourages sales through retail selling techniques and by providing product information and personalized service. Assists customers by locating and providing book and product information. Creates and maintains attractive products displays. Merchandises product in tradebooks, textbooks, and general merchandise areas of the store. Develops and maintains excellent product knowledge. Cash duties including processing a variety of departmental and student accounts, maintaining files, counting and maintaining floats, and data entry. Opens and/or closes store as required. Receipts, balances and deposits funds, and completes all related paperwork. Communicates regularly with staff and management at the Nanaimo Bookstore to provide and receive information regarding textbooks, general merchandise products and customers' needs and requests, accounts receivable and bookstore policies and procedures. Assists Buyers at the Nanaimo Bookstore by counting inventory and other duties as defined. Receives, packs, and unpacks boxes, and ships all products to and from other campus stores.
 
Required Qualifications: Grade 12 diploma plus additional courses equivalent to 6-30 college credits in sales, customer service, bookkeeping or basic accounting, and introductory computer courses in word processing or desktop publishing. Three to five years recent related retail experience, including two to three years of cashiering and customer service and one to two years of retail inventory management. Demonstrated superior front-line service and sales skills. Fast and accurate cashier skills using a computerized POS system and Business Math skills. Entry level word processing proficiency. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-volume, service oriented retail sales environment. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. This position requires some physical labour including standing for 4-7 hours and the ability to move heavy boxes or carts.
 
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in campus book industry.
