  Disability Services is a busy, growing department that each year provides academic accommodations and other services to over 600 students with a wide range of disabilities. The department currently invigilates over 1000 accommodated exams per year. Flexibility and creativity are key to ensuring student needs are appropriately met.
 
Duties: Provide interpreting services during classroom lectures and other related events and activities as directed by the Director of Student Services. Specific duties:
  • Interpret the number of required contact hours.

  • Prepare for class by previewing course outlines, notes and textbooks and occasionally by meeting with course instructors.

  • Work as an effective member of an interpreting team.

  • Develop rapport with students and instructors and facilitate resolution of support service needs and concerns as they arise.
  • In collaboration with student, instructor and Communiction Coordinator, assess the language needs of the student and determine the optimal linguistic equivalency.

  • Be proactive in providing information to faculty and staff concerning interpretation.

  • Utilize student, instructor feedback and feedback from the coordinator to assess effectiveness of service.

Assignments may include work at the Nanaimo, Cowichan, Powell River, and/or Parksville Campuses.
 
  Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
 
Required Qualifications: Graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program and membership in WAVLI. As the assignment requires language of a technical or unique nature, the Interpreter must demonstrate skill in a wide spectrum of vocabulary to match student needs.
