Duties: Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Affairs, ensure safe, effective and efficient operations of the Recreation facility with regards to scheduling, maintenance, staffing and rentals.

Manage departmental budgets and authorize department purchases and expenditures ensuring that all Institutional policies and procedures are adhered to. Manage policies, procedures and processes that support the objectives of the department and University Academic Plan. Work closely with the Athletic Director.

Oversee employees and contractors to ensure a comprehensive offering of Intramural and Fitness and Lifestyle programs and services are offered on the Nanaimo campus.

Major duties:
  • Provide Administrative direction and oversight for the planning, implementation and promotion of all Campus Recreation Programs. Plan and implement a comprehensive selection of student activity programs.

  • Provide leadership for all staff. Establish, assign and schedule workload. Manage gym attendants, technicians, contractors, and work-op students. Select, train, evaluate, and discipline employees.

  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with policies and procedures for daily use, for rental of all Recreation facilities as well as for preventative maintenance.

  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with safety procedures for the facility and for operations within the department.

  • Coordinate facility operations (janitorial, maintenance, planning, etc.) requirements with Facilities staff and local contractors. Oversee regular maintenance of the weight room equipment and gym equipment to ensure adherence to safety standards. Review, investigate, and solve problems related to the operation and usage of Athletics and Recreation facilities.

  • Oversee all events in the Gymnasium and communicate with user groups regarding policies and procedures.

  • Prepare annual budgets and authorize allocation of funds. Order necessary equipment and ensure departmental compliance with all University monetary policies.

  • Plan detailed promotional material for all programs and services.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution. Three to five years demonstrated success and leadership in a sport facility. Three to five years of progressive managerial experience, including budget experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Demonstrated technology competencies of privacy protection, software related to budget tasks (e.g., MS Excel), and communication of information through appropriate media.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Sport and Recreation Management or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution. Experience in a unionized, public sector environment. Experience in a post-secondary setting.
