Duties: Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties relative to the operations of Facilities Services. Perform under the direct supervision of Facilities Services Groundskeeper. Work mainly outdoors in possibly undesirable working conditions.

Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks related to the construction and maintenance of the grounds, equipment and facilities. Plan, layout, prepare and plant planters and annual beds. Seasonal pruning of trees and shrubs; apply fertilizer to trees, shrubs and turf. Turf maintenance including thatching, aerating, mowing and edging. Install and maintain underground irrigation systems. Monitor water requirements of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. Hand weeding in shrub and flowerbeds as required. Other duties and tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: sweep and clear grounds, sidewalks, roads, parking lots, catch basins, storage and work areas; pick stones; dig and/or backfill drainage ditches, culverts, excavations, etc.; shovel and level gravel, sand, bark mulch and earth. Assist Facilities Services grounds personnel generally by performing tasks such as: carrying and passing tools, equipment and supplies.
 
Required Qualifications: Horticultural certification required and two years of directly related landscape work or equivalent combination of education and/or horticulture maintenance experience. Must be physically fit, as work requires the performance of duties resulting in physical fatigue caused by almost continuous moderate physical activity and intermittent periods of heavy physical activity. Job requires frequent exposure to major undesirable and disagreeable conditions as outdoor tasks are completed in all weather conditions. Safety Footwear (CSA Standard) required. Suitable personal clothing and accessories must be supplied as necessary for the duties and weather conditions.
 
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and certification / training in Bobcat operation.
