Duties: Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Affairs the Counsellor will:
  • Provide culturally sensitive individual counselling, assessment, and crisis intervention services to enrolled students presenting with personal, emotional and mental health issues, adjustment and developmental issues and career exploration and study skills issues.

  • Assess and respond appropriately to emergent situations.

  • Create resources and deliver and/or coordinate the delivery of group sessions and workshops on a wide range of study skills, wellness and personal management topics that help students adjust to University life and be successful.

  • Liaise with and refer students to other services and resources within the university or to agencies/programs in the community as needed to coordinate treatment.

  • Maintain confidential counselling records/databases and provide statistical reports on service delivery as required.

  • Participate on Departmental and University committees.

  • Act as a resource on counselling and mental health issues to student groups, faculty, and staff within the university.

  Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology (Counselling or Clinical), or Social Work from an appropriately accredited instution. Certification with a degree-appropriate governing/legal body or association.

Excellent crisis management, intervention, and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with students, colleagues, referral sources, and the campus community. Commitment to ongoing professional development.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience and knowledge of programs and services in a post-secondary educational institution. Three to five years relevant supervised clinical counselling experience at the graduate level.
