Scholarships & Awards

IMPORTANT: To apply for Scholarships & Awards, unless otherwise noted in the award criteria, students must complete and submit the "Scholarship/Award/Bursary Profile" from their student record. Deadline date for submission of student profiles for Scholarship & Award consideration is March 31st.

Scholarships and Awards will be selected based on minimum course load requirements, grade point average requirements, specific donor criteria and information provided on the application form.

Published award information is subject to change. Many of the awards are funded by interest earned on endowment funds established by very generous donors. The interest earned for the awards will vary with the financial markets.

ENTRANCE

BC Lions Society Advanced Education Fund Entrance Awards

2 awards, $600 each; Available to students with a developmental, learning, neurological, sensory or physical disability, enrolling full-time in first year of university studies at VIU in the Fall semester. Financial need will also be considered.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester. .

CFUW - Cowichan Valley Award

1 award, $1,000; Available to mature female students (minimum 20 years of age), enrolled or enrolling in any academic, technical, career or upgrading program at VIU, who have been a resident of the Cowichan Valley for at least one year, and who demonstrates financial need and academic achievement. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

CFUW - Nanaimo Re-Entry Award

1 award, $1,500; Available to female students who have experienced an interruption of studies, and who will be commencing full-time studies at VIU in the fall in a university program leading to a degree. Must have completed at least the equivalent of one year in a degree program. Selection is also based on excellent achievement, and financial need. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

CIBC Entrance Awards

5 awards, $500 each; Available to high school graduates from Vancouver Island or the Sunshine Coast, who are Canadian Citizens. Selection will be based on academic excellence, combined with evidence of community involvement and/or entrepreneurship.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Coastal Community Credit Union Nanaimo Award

1 award, $500; Available to current Nanaimo campus ACP students, or residents of SD #68, who will be enrolling in full-time post-secondary studies for the first time, in the fall semester at any campus of VIU. Financial need will be considered, as well as academic performance (current ACP students). Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Coastal Community Credit Union Parksville/Qualicum Award

1 award, $500; Available to current Parksville/Qualicum campus ACP students, or residents of SD #69, who will be enrolling in full-time post-secondary studies for the first time, in the fall semester at any campus of VIU. Financial need will be considered, as well as academic performance (current ACP students). Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Culinary Institute of Vancouver Island at VIU Entrance Scholarships

4 awards, $1,000 each; Available to high school or mature students who will be entering the Culinary Arts program at VIU in the up-coming school year, August or February intake. Selection will be based on academic excellence. Applicants must supply their most recent transcripts with application.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall or spring, (depending on intake).

Durnin Family Health Services Award

1 award, $6,000*; Available to students who are entering, or continuing in, the Bachelor of Child & Youth Care degree, or the Early Childhood Education & Care Diploma program. Applicants in the Early Childhood Education & Care program may be continuing to a Bachelor’s degree. Selection will be based on financial need, in addition to academic achievement. *Funds will be applied as follows: $3,000 for fall tuition, and $3,000 for spring tuition based on successful completion of the fall semester. This award may be renewed for the next year of study, providing recipient continues to meet criteria.

Federal Conservative Party - Electrical Award

1 award, $500; Available to students who will be entering the Electrical program at VIU. Students are required to state why they are obtaining a trades career, and must provide recent transcripts and a reference letter with their on-line profile. Preference will be given to Vancouver Island residents. *This award is funded by the Federal Conservative Party and selected student may choose not to accept due to personal values. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Federal Conservative Party - Heavy Equipment Operator Award

1 award, $500; Available to students who will be entering the Heavy Equipment Operator program at VIU. Students are required to state why they are obtaining a trades career, and must provide recent transcripts and a reference letter with their on-line profile. Preference will be given to Vancouver Island residents. *This award is funded by the Federal Conservative Party and selected student may choose not to accept due to personal values. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Federal Conservative Party - Heavy Mechanical Trades Award

1 award, $500; Available to students who will be entering the Heavy Mechanical Trades program at VIU. Students are required to state why they are obtaining a trades career, and must provide recent transcripts and a reference letter with their on-line profile. Preference will be given to Vancouver Island residents. *This award is funded by the Federal Conservative Party and selected student may choose not to accept due to personal values. Funds awarded a a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Federal Conservative Party - Power Engineering Operator Award

1 award, $500; Available to students who will be entering the Power Engineering Operator program at VIU. Students are required to state why they are obtaining a trades career, and must provide recent transcripts and a reference letter with their on-line profile. Preference will be given to Vancouver Island residents. *This award is funded by the Federal Conservative Party and selected student may choose not to accept due to personal values. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Federal Conservative Party - Welding Award

1 award, $500; Available to students who will be entering the Welding program at VIU. Students are required to state why they are obtaining a trades career, and must provide recent transcripts and a reference letter with their on-line profile. Preference will be given to Vancouver Island residents. *This award is funded by the Federal Conservative Party and selected student may choose not to accept due to personal values. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Frank Ney Memorial Entrance Award

1 award, $750; Available to graduates of a Nanaimo High School entering an applied, technology or university program at VIU. Must demonstrate financial need.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Hayes Stewart Little Award

1 award, $500; For strong students with evident motivation, who may not necessarily be in the top 5% academically, and who demonstrate financial need. Available to students entering a certificate, diploma or degree program in business at either the management or support level. Preference given to students graduating from a Secondary School in the Cowichan Valley, SD #79.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Herold Engineering Entrance Awards

2 awards, $500 each; Available to students entering the Engineering program at VIU. The intent of this award is to benefit a first year student who demonstrates strong academics, leadership in school, sports or clubs, volunteer and extra-curricular activities, and a commitment to their community. Applicants will be required to include an essay with their application (up to 500 words) describing how they fulfill the criteria, and a copy of their high school transcript.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Horticultural Technician Award

1 award, $500; Available for academic achievement and financial need to students entering the Horticulture Technician program. Applicants must provide a paragraph in their profile, explaining why they are interested in studying in the Horticultural Technician program. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the January program start.

Island Scallops - K'omoks First Nation Education Fund

1 award, $1,000; Available to First Nations students who will be entering, or continuing in any certificate, diploma or degree program at VIU. Preference will be given to those who are community members of the K'omoks First Nation, and/or who will be enrolled in the Fisheries & Aquaculture program.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Island Scallops - Qualicum First Nation Education Fund

1 award, $1,000; Available to First Nations students who will be entering, or continuing in any certificate, diploma or degree program at VIU. Preference will be given to those who are community members of the Qualicum First Nation, and/or who will be enrolled in the Fisheries & Aquaculture program.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Macville Foundation Entrance Award

1 award, Full tuition (less ancillary fees); Jointly funded by Vancouver Island University's Foundation and the Macville Charitable Foundation. Available to students who have been accepted into a university transfer or degree program at VIU, were born on Vancouver Island or resided here for at least the last five years. The Macville Charitable Foundation was established to help Vancouver Island students acquire, through post-secondary education, the tools required to contribute significantly to society. The Foundation aims to strengthen the voice of students who have demonstrated their potential, motivation and commitment to higher education, and who have a vision for their on-going role as contributing members of society. Students must be enrolling in an 80% course load. Selection will be based on financial need, academic excellence and letters of recommendation. Applicants will be required to submit an essay, as part of the application package, describing how they fulfill the award criteria.   Funds will be applied to fall and spring tuition in the upcoming school year.

Nicholas Plecas Entrance Scholarship

1 award, $1,000; Available for academic excellence, to students entering Bachelor of Science or Applied Science programs at VIU in the fall semester.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Nora Fulton Gibson Entrance Awards

2 awards, $1,500 each; Available for academic achievement and financial need to high school graduates, or mature students, entering VIU for the first time in any program. Preference will be given to students from the Cowichan Valley. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Pisces BBA Entrance Scholarship

1 award, $2,000; Available to students of First Nations background, entering the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program at VIU.  Applicants must have attained a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the previous year (in high school or VIU upgrading).  Award will be renewed in the fall term each year, for the duration of the students' four year undergraduate program, providing a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a minimum course load of 80% is maintained.  Applicants are required to attach a short bio outlining their background and aspirations to the application.   Funds awarded as tuition credit for the fall semester.

Pisces BSN Entrance Scholarship

1 award, $2,000; Available to students of First Nations background, entering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at VIU.  Applicants must have attained a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the previous year (in high school or VIU upgrading).  Applicants are required to submit a short bio outlining their background and aspirations to their profile. Funds awarded as tuition credit for the fall semester.

Pisces Entrance Scholarship

1 award, $2,000; Available to students of First Nations background, entering a degree program at VIU, with preference given to students entering the Bachelor of Business Administration program.  Applicants must have attained a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the previous year (in high school or VIU upgrading).  Award will be renewed in the fall term each year, for the duration of the students' four year undergraduate program, providing a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a minimum course load of 80% is maintained.  Applicants are required to attach a short bio outlining their background and aspirations to the application.   Funds awarded as tuition credit for the fall semester.

Ray Robazza Memorial Forestry Award (WFP)

1 award, $1,000; Offered annually by Western Forest Products in recognition of Ray Robazza to celebrate his integrity, joie de vivre and his commitment to developing the next generation of foresters. The award is offered to students enrolled, or enrolling in the Forest Resources Technology Program, with preference to students who have graduated from secondary schools in communities where Western Forest Products operates, or to those who have worked for, or have a direct family member who works for Western Forest Products. Consideration to students with demonstrated passion for forestry and intent on a career in the BC coastal forest industry upon graduation. (Note: WFP may request an interview, and publish name and photo of recipient) Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Royal Bank Award (Parksville/Qualicum)

1 award, $500; Available to current Parksville/Qualicum Campus ACP students, or residents of School District #69, who will be enrolling in full-time post-secondary studies for the first time, in the fall semester at any campus of VIU. Financial need will be considered, as well as academic performance (current ACP students).   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Tommy Douglas Entrance Award

1 award, $500; Available for academic excellence to students proceeding directly from High School to post-secondary education at VIU for the fall semester.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

Victoria Foundation Chinese-Canadian Community Scholarships

3 awards, $5,000; Available to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, who are of Chinese origin, and who will be entering VIU for the first time in the fall semester. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

VIU Chancellor's Entrance Scholarships for Aboriginal Students

6 awards, Full tuition (less ancillary fees); Available to top academic grade 12 students from First Nations communities, Friendship Centres or Metis organizations on Vancouver Island (including Powell River and Bella Bella). Students must be completing their grade 12 high school year with an “A” average of 90% or higher (with no mark lower than a “B”) for each grade 11 and 12 course in the 8 defined academic courses. These scholarships are renewable for the duration of the student’s undergraduate studies at Vancouver Island University (VIU), up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree (maximum 5 years). To qualify for renewal, students must maintain both a semester and cumulative GPA of 3.50 with a minimum 80% course load (12 credits) in each semester, as defined on the VIU website. Endorsement form and transcripts must be submitted to the Financial Aid & Awards office, by the Principal, by April 30. (These forms are available on this site in our "Applications" section from March 1 - April 30). *Note: This scholarship is open to domestic students only. International students are encouraged to apply through the VIU International Education Scholarship & Award website at www2.viu.ca/international/awards.asp

VIU Cowichan Campus High School Entrance Award

1 award, $1,000; Available to students who are proceeding directly from high school, and will be entering their first year of University studies at VIU. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

VIU Entrance Scholarships for High School Students

Awards, $1,000 - $2,000; Awarded for academic excellence, available to one top student graduating from each Regional Public High School, within the Cowichan to Parksville/Qualicum catchment area (including Powell River), who will be entering VIU in the fall semester, in any post-secondary program.   Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

VIU International Refugee Newcomer Award

Multiple awards, Amount may vary; Available as an entrance award, based on financial need to students who have arrived as refugees to Canada within the last five years. Applicants must be accepted into any Academic or Trades program, including English as a Second Language - Level AP4 and above. Two deadlines: October 31st will be for January intake, and March 31st will be for September intake.

VIU President’s Dual Credit Entrance Scholarship for High School Students

Several awards, $1,000 each; Available for academic excellence, to one top graduating student from each qualifying Vancouver Island High School offering the dual credit program. Selection based on the highest overall grade 11 and 12 percentage, combined with the highest GPA (3.5 or higher) of two dual credit courses. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

VIU President's Entrance Awards for Scholar Athletes

8 awards, Full tuition (less ancillary fees); One award is available for each of the following Mariner teams: Volleyball (men's & women's), Basketball (men's & women's), Soccer (men's & women's), Golf and Badminton. Available to top academic student athletes upon entrance to their first year of studies at VIU. Students must be completing their grade 12 high school year with an “A” average of 85% or higher (with no mark lower than a “B”) for each grade 11 and 12 course in the 8 defined academic courses. These scholarships are renewable for the duration of the student’s undergraduate studies at Vancouver Island University (VIU), up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree (maximum 5 years). To qualify for renewal, students must maintain both a semester and cumulative GPA of 3.0 with a minimum 80% course load (12 credits) in each semester, as defined on the VIU website. Selections for these awards are determined by VIU's Athletic Department.

VIU Student Call Centre Entrance Award

1 award, $1,000; Established by the VIU Call Centre students, this award is to support students who are beginning their studies at VIU. Funds awarded as a tuiton credit for the fall semester.


Transfer Awards

Students transferring to the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, or Simon Fraser University, are advised to contact the Financial Aid & Awards office at the respective institution, as each have many "in-house" scholarships and bursaries, some of which are specifically designated for students transferring from regional colleges or universities.

College Transfer Entrance Award to Royal Roads University

1 award, $2,000: Students enrolled at Vancouver Island University who are planning to enter a Royal Roads University undergraduate program, may apply to VIU for a $2,000 tuition credit. An eligible candidate will be able to demonstrate achievement through academic or other preparation in one of our major theme areas: sustainable development, entrepreneurship, empowering leadership, and conflict analysis and management.

A complete application consists of an application form and a one page essay (application form and information available on-line from Royal Roads). Submit completed application package to the Financial Aid & Awards Office at VIU by the specified due date on the Royal Roads website.

 

Irving K. Barber Scholarships

  • Transfer Scholarships

    Up to 160 scholarships of $5,000 each are available to students who have completed at least one year of full-time study and must transfer to another public post-secondary institution in BC to complete their degree. Please note, GPA and residency criteria have been changed - see website for full details.
  • BC Aboriginal Student Awards - 2017 applications available at Irving K. Barber

    Awards of $1,000 to $5,000 are available to BC residents of Aboriginal ancestry, who have been active in their school or community, and are planning to study in either a certificate, diploma, degree, or approved trades / apprenticeship programs.
  • Aboriginal Teacher Education Awards - 2017 applications available at Irving K. Barber

    Awards of $5,000 are available to Aboriginal students registered in a teacher education program at a BC University, which leads to certification by the BC Teachers' Council. This includes programs leading to a Developmental Standard Term Certificate in First Nations Language and Culture.

W.L. Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships

Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities: the Open Scholarship and the Travelling Scholarship. Both are to support graduate study.

  • The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere.  One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $10,000 but it is subject to change.

 

  • The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations.  Recently four scholarships of $11,000 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change.
