Senior Payroll Clerk

Duties: Produce bi-weekly payroll for Manager's review: organize, schedule, perform and process accurate multi-union payroll on a bi-weekly basis, following established controls and procedures and ensuring all legal requirements of provincial and federal legislation are met. Perform core transactional work in addition to bi-weekly payroll-wide processing work. Utilizing a payroll cycle checklist, ensure all processing steps are completed by the three payroll clerks accurately and within established timeframes. Perform senior payroll-wide processing work (once all detailed payroll entry completed) to prepare payroll for transmission to the bank and posting to the General Ledger. Run process steps to close each payroll. Serve as a key knowledgeable resource providing payroll processing directions to clerks as required.

Supervise and process pay changes of salaries, deductions, and check time sheets for overtime, loss of pay, sick time, premium pay, etc. Liaise with Human Resources to coordinate data entry for employee benefit plans including BC Pension plans.

Answer queries relating to pay and deductions, reconcile monthly payroll accounts, prepare and remit employee and employer deductions.

Produce preliminary T4 and T4A information and be a key participant in payroll development projects.
Required Qualifications: One-year certificate in an accounting/payroll administration program from an appropriately accredited institution which provides sufficient preparation and knowledge of a complete payroll process and related accounting functions; and the Canadian Payroll Association (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) designation. Seven years current experience in a large union organization processing computerized payroll and all related functions and demonstrate a thorough knowledge and proficiency with payroll procedures, benefits administration and related accounting functions. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Demonstrated ability to lead a cohesive team in a continually changing environment, knowledge of integrated web-based HR computerized payroll system, and demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with MS Excel and MS Word.

Advanced math, reconciliation, analytical and problem solving skills, superior organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize workloads, multi-task, enter data accurately and efficiently, meet deadlines and work independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrated team leadership skills, ability to communicate effectively with external organizations in a professional manner with proven interpersonal skills.

Experience working with collective agreements.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with StarGarden payroll system.
