Duties: Purchase goods for resale for the General Merchandise (GM) department in accordance with the GM purchasing budget, GM purchasing plan and the purchasing policies of VIU. Negotiate best price, terms and delivery with vendors, and determine the quality and quantity of products purchased. Place and receive all orders/reorders by generating purchase orders, reconciling purchase orders and invoices, and approve payment for invoices.

Responsible for GM special orders. Identify market trends, forecast sales, analyzes past sales performance and utilizes metrics such as cost of goods and gross margins to develop buying strategies for upcoming fiscal year to maximize Campus Store sales. Act as liaison for all vendors, VIU Faculty and VIU Staff. Provides excellent customer service. Implements selling techniques to increase sales. Explores opportunities to increase revenue. Maintain the computerized GM inventory system of data information associated with the products being purchased and resold. Ensure accuracy and functionality of the computerized inventory system. Train staff on the Campus Store data entry guidelines and ensure Campus Store data entry guidelines are followed.

Supervise the flow of merchandise transfers between the Campus Stores. Utilize the GM purchasing plan to manage inventory and place timely reorders and deliveries. Determine the life cycle of products and coordinate a markdown schedule. Periodically runs reports and conducts manual inventory counts of merchandise ensuring the physical inventory matches the inventory reports. Work with team to complete annual inventory of general merchandise, research and resolve discrepancies. Identify and implement marketing and merchandising strategies, including store layout, creating displays and marketing materials, signage for products, determining specials and coordinates in-store sale events by developing an annual sales calendar.

Coordinate off-site events such as convocation and the Mariners' mobile store. Design floor displays and manage visual standards. Determine marketing and merchandising strategies including preparations for major events such as convocation. Connect GM buying decisions to the GM merchandise calendar, to enhance the VIU brand and reputation, and to provide a suitable product mix while ensuring that the Campus Store's margin and budget targets are achieved. Determines and directs staff in daily priorities for the general merchandise department. Train and mentor staff in product labeling, merchandising and displays. Remain current with new product lines by researching the current retail trends, understanding the demands of the VIU community, and making purchasing decisions that satisfy the changing markets and market demands.
Required Qualifications: Two-year business diploma focusing on business management, marketing, merchandising and consumer behavior from an appropriately accredited institution. Computer courses in Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, Outlook. Expert knowledge required in several areas including art supplies, stationery, giftware, clothing and computers.

Five years recent experience including retail buying, marketing and merchandising, and retail customer service experience with proven effective customer service, problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Recent experience working with a computerized inventory system. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

Proven ability to ensure accuracy and functionality of the computerized inventory system. Proven ability to accurately manage inventory by using data from a computerized inventory system in accordance with purchasing budgets and purchasing plans. Proven ability to identify market trends, forecasts sales, analyze past sales performance and utilize metrics such as cost of goods and gross margins to develop buying strategies.

Ability to understand the impact of GM buying decisions on the financial performance of the Campus Store. Ability to determine the life cycle of products and coordinates markdown. Intermediate level computer skills specifically MS Office Suite; Word, Excel and Outlook.

Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Excellent organizational skills. Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in high-volume retail environment with urgent deadlines and time constraints. Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment. Supervisory skills; proven ability to determine priorities and direct staff, and to lead, train and mentor staff. Ability to travel for work when required.
Preferred Qualifications: University degree from an appropriately accredited institution. Experience preferably in a post-secondary setting. Knowledge of Campus Store industry; specifically the General Merchandise area. Computerized inventory experience with Winprism and Webprism.
