  The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning is Vancouver Island University's teaching, learning and technology centre. We assist with the implementation of VIU's Academic Plan and work collaboratively with academic faculties and teaching faculty members to promote and support innovation and excellence in learning. We do this by supporting the creation and development of high quality curriculum-supported learning opportunities, through the appropriate integration of research-informed teaching tools, the use of interactive technologies and the promotion of vibrant learning environments.
Duties: Maintain solutions and services around emerging and existing learning technologies and develop scalable applications to support teaching and learning. Provide faculty with flexible access to courses and programs delivered via the learning management system (LMS), Brightspace by D2L.

Design and implement scripts, tools, databases, and processes to increase the productivity of faculty and staff. Provide technical assistance to faculty using tools and learning technologies such as Brightspace by D2L, Kaltura, video and audio production technology, WordPress, and web-conferencing solutions.

Ensure that all teaching and learning related technologies are monitored, maintained and upgraded on a strategic release cycle. Solve advanced problems relating to technical applications as requested. Work with html, php, xml, sql, and css as required. Communicate and collaborate with outside cloud-based providers; liaise with helpdesk staff to resolve issues and document solutions.

Ensure applications are configured for reliable backups and monitored. Implement and maintain change management practices relating to all applications, projects and systems. Maintain systems and applications, including updates, upgrades, and fixes to ensure continued accessibility, integrity and reliability. Optimize learning technologies for maximum performance and work within existing procedures for configuration control management.

Track/monitor all applications to ensure high-levels of security and privacy. Research plugins, LTIs, applications, and web-based tools and integrate as requested.

Ensure the Centre remains current in evidence-based teaching tools, interactive technology and diverse learning environments. Work with data and web analytic tools to produce reports, visualizations and infographics.
  Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications:
  • Two-year diploma in information technology or related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Two years recent work experience relating to learning technologies, supporting the development of interactive learning experiences, documentation, and change management.

  • Current knowledge and experience with technology integrations, distributed learning and proficiency with Learning Management Systems, WordPress, Drupal, web conferencing systems and multimedia production.

  • Solid understanding of web technologies, collaborative tools, network diagnostics, and data-driven applications.

  • Current experience installing, configuring, documenting, testing, and supporting new and emerging technology as well as experience providing one-to-one and small group training in areas of applications and processes.

  • Current understanding of the cloud/software as a service, and experience of troubleshooting, collaborating with helpdesk services, and documenting solutions.

  • Documented professional development to remain current with technology and educational technology focusing on evidence-based teaching tools.

  • Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills. Work well as part of a team and also effective independently.

  • Takes initiative to generate proactive solutions and/or preventive measures that increase productivity or prevent disruption of services and ensures continued systems and application reliability.

  • Experiences in collaborative development and best practice project management.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Formal industry training in programming, database administration and optimization, server administration, and service and support, etc.

  • Degree or Masters in technology-related discipline.

  • An understanding of teaching, learning and technology in higher education.
