Student life is a period of unique change filled with many challenges. As a member of the VIU community you have the opportunity to support students who may be struggling with issues that affect their academic performance and well-being. Counselling Services supports faculty and staff in a number of ways::

  • Orientation to counselling services
    • A counsellor will come to your class to provide an orientation
  • Consultation
    • discuss a concern about a particular student
    • A student may be on your mind and you want to debrief or get another perspectivet

  • Student Behaviours that disrupt the learning environment
    • yelling, inappropriate language, sending numerous emails or phone calls - some inappropriate content, refusing to follow directions

  • The Early Alert System
      • Use if there is no immediate threat
      • Can link student with useful resources to address their situation
      • Does not go on any student record

    • Students may need extra support or intervention, this committee has representatives from across the campus
  • Risk & Threat Assessment team
    • For any safety concerns you may have
  • Identify & Respond to Student Needs

Workshops for Faculty

    Capacity to Connect: Supporting Students in Distress

    To register: VIU Pro D Calendar or feel free to request a workshop for your department or area

      • Have you ever noticed signs of distress in students and wondered what to do? In this workshop you will learn to recognize signs of distress, respond effectively, and refer students to appropriate resources. Come learn how you are a part of VIU’s web of well-being. (75-90 minutes)

    Supporting Life: Suicide Prevention

    • This workshop will continue the conversation about the stressors students might be experiencing as well as uncover implications that those stressorscould have if they are left unaddressed. This might include suicide, which is a leading cause of death in youth. Our goal is to give you information and support so that if you do encounter a student with thoughts of suicide you will have the confidence and tools to respond.” (90 minutes)
