VIU Contributes to Earth Hour, 2009! March 28 at 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
Vancouver Island University has committed to join the Earth Hour initiative sponsored by the World Wildlife Foundation.
Earth Hour will take place on March 28 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
The aim of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of the impacts of global warming, the most significant of which is climate change.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, on March 31, 2007, when 2.2 million people and 2100 businesses turned off their lights for one hour to inspire people to take action on climate change.
Last year Earth Hour spread to 370 towns in 35 countries, with 50 million people participating. This year the organizers target is for 1 billion people in 1000 cities around the world to “turn off.”
VIU’s Facilities Services department will be sending out informational notices to our security and cleaning contractors to enlist their support in ensuring that all unnecessary lights are switched off for the Earth Hour.
Our new energy manager Daryl Amos, is asking that each of us who work at VIU take some time to examine our workspace, classrooms and lab’s to ensure that only essential energy loads have been left on when you leave your workplace Friday March 27th or March 28th.
We also encourage you to contribute to Earth Hour in your home.
Some of the things you can do in support of Earth Hour include:
- Turn off your desk lamp
- Turn off your computer monitor at the end of the day;
- If you have a thermostat in your workplace, you can turn that down to a “night setback” level;
- Close windows and doors;
- If you have chargers for your Blackberry, cell phone, or PDA, or perhaps a charger for small power tools that are not in use, please unplug them too
- Turn off your lights
- Unplug devices in your home or office that will not be used over the weekend or during Earth Hour
As we want to ensure that anyone working on or walking through the Nanaimo campus during Earth Hour is safe, essential lighting will be left ON at the Nanaimo campus throughout Earth Hour.
The VIU Energy Management Program tag line is, “…the Power to Change…” which reflects the ability of individuals to affect significant change through relatively small gestures. Your gestures in support of the Earth Hour initiative will collectively help reduce energy use at VIU for that hour and we thank you in advance for your support of this initiative.
