VIU Assistance Phone System - Phase II
Facilities Services and Campus Development (FSCD) is pleased to announce, the installation of Phase 2 of VIU's Nanaimo Campus Assistance Phone System is now complete.
Phase 2 included 11 new locations (in addition to the 12 locations installed in Phase 1).
7 of the new locations (on the Nanaimo Campus) have been operational since February 8th, 2013. 4 of the new locations (at Western Student Housing) have been operational since April 5th, 2013.
Below is a reference map indicating the locations of all 23 Assistance Phones.
When & How to Use :
The new Assistance Phones are blue cylindrical "towers" (and one wall-mounted unit in the Library Commons) located strategically around the Nanaimo Campus and Western Student Housing and are available to provide assistance to anyone should it be needed. The following are expamples of when to use an Assistance Phone:
- Personal Security:
- "Safe Walk" request
- Assistance to access buildings / offices
- medical / first-aid / fire
- vehicle / building break-in
- report suspicious activity / person
- theft / vandalism
- natural gas or propane leaks / smells
- anything building or site-related that causes you concern
- Any other event of an urgent nature
Should you need to activate an Assistance Phone, simply push the button labelled "PUSH FOR HELP" on the front panel of the Assistance Phone. The phone will dial, and an operator will assist you shortly.
The Ministry of Advanced Education provided funding toward improving campus safety, which includded an expansion of VIU's new Assistance Phone System. This was a welcome improvement as FSCD works to ensure campus safety is a top priority.
