2016 GivingTuesday - Thank You!
Vancouver Island University’s GivingTuesday campaign was an enormous success and we are truly grateful for everyone who participated to make it possible.
In case you missed it, VIU’s Advancement and Alumni Relations Office surpassed its original GivingTuesday goal of $150,000 raised in support of students.
The team raised $157,112 from 220 gifts, a remarkable achievement that displays the immense strength and generosity of the VIU Community.
What is GivingTuesday?
Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and now we have GivingTuesday! It is a new global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it’s a time where charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community has come together for GivingTuesday. We ask that partners create and commit to a project for GivingTuesday and then help spread the word to their networks.
Is the GivingTuesday mission all about charity?
Yes, GivingTuesday is all about charity! It’s about creating a national movement for giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages donations and volunteering activities that support any and all charities and non-profit organizations.
How did GivingTuesday start?
GivingTuesday was started in Canada by a group of organizations including GIV3, CanadaHelps.org, and now includes over 1,900 partners. GivingTuesday was originally started in the US in 2012 by the UN Foundation, the NYC 92Y and several other community organizations.
The Thrifty Foods Double Up program matches money at fundraising events organized by VIU faculty, staff and students up to $1,000. Please visit the Thrifty Foods Double Up for details on the program.
The VIU Online Auction raises funds to support our students and 100% of the proceeds from each prize donated is distributed to student awards, equipment and learning opportunities. This is a collaborative effort with the VIU Foundation, Alumni Association, staff, faculties, community businesses and individuals all working together in support of students. The VIU Online Auction is open to the public, allowing the community to engage in bidding on items while raising funds for students.
The VIU Online Auction was a huge success in 2016 with a record number of auction prizes donated by businesses and also funds raised on behalf of students, amounting to almost $30,000! The VIU Online Auction will be back again October 2017!
