Duties: This position reports to the Director International Student Services and works within the international finance team, which includes the Manager International Finance, a full-time International Finance Assistant, along with this position. The team manages the international financial services for the 2100+ international students at VIU, as well as supports and provides advice to colleagues within the Faculty of International Education, and across VIU, regarding international financial matters.

This position, along with the full-time International Finance Assistant, is part of the front-line team for international finance and is responsible for responding to student inquiries, in-person, over the phone, and via email, as well as responding to inquiries from agents and other external contacts. The position accepts and processes all forms of payments (cash, credit cards, debit cards, bank draft, cheques, and bank wire transfers); is the central receiving point for incoming bank wire transfers for all departments at VIU, not only for International Education; posts payments to the appropriate accounts in the student ledger; communicates with students regarding overdue fees and inputs late fee charges; confirms accuracy of charges on student records; reconciles the Cashier and Accounts Receivable ledger batches; prepares bank deposits; receives financial guarantees and maintains a spreadsheet for sponsored students; assists with Health Insurance enrolments; and processes student refunds according to the International refund policy. The position also assists the Manager International Finance with various projects and initiatives by providing administrative support. In addition, the position may be asked to support the International Admissions team during peak times.
Required Qualifications: Applied Business Technology Certificate or equivalent, and at least 3-5 years directly related work experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Familiarity with student financial ledger systems, ideally at VIU, including cashier, accounts receivable, and registration modules. Familiarity with, and experience receiving payments via online payment systems. Demonstrated experience with financial transactions, including cash, cheques, bank drafts, international bank wire transfers, credit and debit cards, and preparing bank deposits. Advanced level word processing and MS Office proficiency, in particular advanced skills with excel spreadsheets. Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated understanding of fraud detection. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; set work priorities and handle multiple tasks. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of international clients/students. Superior written and spoken English. Strong decision making and problem solving skills are required to assess inquiries and information in order to respond appropriately. Demonstrated experience communicating with non-native English speakers (both written and spoken).
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working at a financial institution (bank).
Formal education or training in bookkeeping and business mathematics, or equivalent.
Familiarity with VIU's web based student update system.
Familiarity with access databases.
Experience working within an international education setting.
