This checklist contains items that are intended to set new leaders up for successful VIU careers. Thank you for welcoming our new employees and ensuring the following factors are managed within your areas:


Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic

    • Meetings set up with:
      • Provost and Vice-President Academic (bi-weekly for the first semester of employment)
      • Associate Vice-President, Academic (set up monthly meetings)
      • Associate Vice-President, Scholarship Research and Creative Activity
      • Director of Aboriginal Education & Engagement
      • Operations Manager
        • Overview of chairs roles and responsibilities

Human Resources

  • Meetings set up to review:
    • Orientation to HR with Associate Vice-President, Human Resources
    • Area to review sessions on collective agreements/labour environment and review any departmental concerns with appropriate HR Advisor
    • Training to be held on:
      • Search committees
      • Disability accommodations
      • Well-being information, sick leave, disability, KPAL
      • Benefits overview - individual
      • Labour Relations (LTC, ROFR)
      • Labour Relations cases -  history and practice

    Financial Services

  • Meeting with Financial Services to review:
    • Purchasing and Accounts Payable
    • Budgeting
    • Review of pertinent forms
    • Finance/Academic culture

Student Affairs

  • Associate Vice-President Student Affairs to review
    • Student Appeals and Student Conduct
    • Threat Assessment
    • Early Alert System
    • Centre for Experiential Learning 

  • Director of Student Affairs to review:
    • Health and Wellness, Counselling and Advising

  • Connect wtih Director, Student Engagement and Experiential Learning
  • Connect with Director, High Performance Sport, Recreation and Physical Literacy
