  The Department of Recreation and Tourism Management at Vancouver Island University is seeking to fill one regular full-time position beginning August 1st, 2018. The department currently offers a Masters in Sustainable Leisure Management, a Bachelor in Tourism Management, a major in Recreation Management, two diplomas in Tourism Studies and Recreation and Sport Management, and is developing a minor in Events Management. We are looking for an individual who is interested in growing with our progressive department and assuming a shared program leadership role in the future. VIU is a non-traditional, progressive, regional teaching university, primarily focused on undergraduate teaching. We have a professor/student ratio that fosters high engagement with students (max class size is 34 students). We use creative teaching and research styles and approaches, and we encourage innovation and individuality from our faculty members. The department has a highly creative and collegial program environment that emphasizes collaboration and faculty 'live' the tenets of leisure education that we teach and research. VIU has an across the institution non-tiered professorial designation. VIU is located in the scenic and highly livable city of Nanaimo on beautiful Vancouver Island in 'Super-Natural' British Columbia, where we enjoy the mildest climate in Canada. Come join us!
Duties: With a teaching philosophy that involves theoretical, applied, and experiential learning, the successful candidate will develop and prepare lessons and instruct, assess, and grade student achievements in the Recreation and Tourism programs. Assisting students through scheduled office hours and supervising graduate students is also required.

Contribute to department growth and potentially assume a shared leadership role in the future. Research programs are an optional but encouraged aspect of professional development and contributions to VIU; all members of our department are engaged in a wide variety of research activities.

Teach across the curriculum in courses such as statistical analysis, research methods, tourism product development, arts and culture, market research, and/or experiential tourism.

  Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications: A Doctoral degree related to Tourism Management from an appropriately accredited institution and recent and relevant teaching and research experience is required. Doctoral candidates (ABD) will be considered if the candidate can demonstrate completion within 6 months of appointment start date. This position requires expertise in research methods and quantitative data analysis in the broad area of tourism management such as ecotourism, experiential tourism, event management, and/or tourist motivations and behaviours.

A strong focus on teaching and student learning, demonstrated competency working effectively in a team-oriented environment and responsiveness to diverse learning styles, cultural and academic backgrounds.

Excellent communication skills, with a strong interest and proven abilities in working in a cross cultural and learning-centred environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in undergraduate and graduate level teaching and supervision through the thesis research process. Ability to engage learners in experiential education, enable community engagement, and demonstrate a commitment to the scholarship of teaching, learning and applied research. A track record of involving students in research or scholarly activity.
