Positive Space Workshops

The Positive Space Alliance offers workshops on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion. The workshop covers a variety of topics, including issues faced by 2SLGTBQ+ people, definitions of queer terminology, gender identity and expression, causes of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, queerphobia, and more! Upon completion of the training, attendees will be offered a Positive Space Alliance sticker that they can put up in their workstation to signify to their colleagues and students that they support the 2SLGBTQ+ community and VIU as a welcome and inclusive work environment for all.

To request a workshop, email PositiveSpace@viu.ca.

By choosing to display the Positive Space symbol in your office, work area or residence room you are publicly affirming:

  • Support for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and more (2SLGBTQ+) persons to be full members of the Vancouver Island University community;
  • Commitment to equality for all and opposition to discrimination and hate;

  • Commitment to including two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and more (2SLGBTQ+) persons by using language that assumes the Vancouver Island University community includes members of all sexual orientations and gender identities; and

  • Willingness to provide support to individuals by listening carefully and/or making a referral to an appropriate resource.

PSA Initiatives

The Positive Space Alliance has opened an endowment account with the VIU Foundation to support an award for a student who displays leadership in raise awareness of diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity, and challenging the patterns of silence that continue to marginalize 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.

Our target is to raise $20,000 - donations of any amount will help us get there.

Why Have An Award?

Demonstrates support & provides encouragement to students who are often discouraged by family circumstances from attending a post-secondary institution.

This normalizes being a 2SLGBTQ+ student or ally – it sends the message that 2SLGBTQ+ students are as worthy of financial support and recognition as other students.

It provides visibility for the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their allies on campus.
