All applicants to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) are required to complete a 90-110 minute online, open-response, situational judgment assessment (Casper) to assist with our selection process. Completion of Casper is a mandatory admission requirement for the BSN program. Snapshot and Duet are not required.

Casper is an online test which assesses for non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that VIU believes are important for successful students and graduates of our program. Results from the Casper test will complement Grade Point Average (GPA) for applicant screening. In implementing Casper, we are trying to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our selection process.

In order to take Casper, you will be responsible for securing access to a desktop or laptop computer with a microphone, a webcam, and a reliable high-speed internet connection with an internet speed of at least 1.5 Mbps and upload speed of at least 2 Mbps on your selected test date. No exceptions will be provided for applicants unable to take Casper online due to being located at sites where internet is not dependable due to technical or political factors.

Register and sign up for the Casper test

Reserve a test using a piece of government-issued photo ID and your VIU student number. There is a $50 fee to write the test and an additional $16 for each school you choose to have your results sent to. You will be provided with a limited number of testing dates and times. Please note that these are the only testing dates available for the 2023-24 application cycle for the VIU BSN program. There will be no additional tests scheduled. Please use an email address that you check regularly; there may be updates to the test schedule.

Please direct any accommodation requests and general inquiries on the test to support@acuityinsights.app. Alternatively, you may use the “chat bubble” in the bottom right hand corner of your screen on Acuity Insights. The “chat” feature will be available after you have created and logged into your account.

The Casper test is comprised of 14 sections of video and written scenarios. Following each scenario, you will be required to answer a set of probing questions under a time limit. Each response is graded by a different rater, giving a very robust and reliable view of personal and professional characteristics important to our program. No studying is required for Casper, although you may want to familiarize yourself with the test structure and ensure you have a quiet environment to take the test.

Casper test results are valid for one admission cycle. Applicants who have taken the test in a previous year will be required to take the test again for subsequent applications.

Your Casper score will be sent directly to VIU 2-3 weeks after your testing date. These scores are not released to students.
