Asper Media Studies Endowment Award

In 2001, the CanWest Global Foundation donated $150,000 to create an endowment to support research and scholarships in Media Studies at Vancouver Island University. Two-thirds of the original endowment is allocated to fund research and program development in the Media Studies Department and conference attendance.

Priority for funding will be given to Media Studies regular faculty (VIUFA). Proposals by regular VIUFA faculty not in Media Studies must clearly demonstrate the benefits to the Media Studies Department, its programs, and students.


  • up to $5,000.00 for research projects
  • up to $2,000.00 for conference attendance
These funds are made available through the Asper Media Studies Endowment (CanWest Global)

Proposal & Submission Instructions

Prepare a 1-2 page proposal containing:

  • an outline of the proposed activity, including start/end dates;
  • an indication of how the activity relates to the Media Studies Department priorities and/or institutional priorities as outlined in the Academic Plan;
  • expected results (including reach if applicable);
  • a statement of planned knowledge dissemination activities (for example, presentations, public talks, student posters, papers, reports, videos, etc.) ¬†Note: a portion of the budget can be allocated to knowledge dissemination.
  • a detailed budget with a justification, and with specific details linked to project activities; include any additional sources of funding;
  • a statement on the impact if funding is not available;
  • an estimate of transportation and accommodation expenses, if applicable
  • a signed Institutional Signature Sheet (not counted in the 2-page limit)

Considerations for Assessment

Proposals will be vetted by a committee comprised of:

  • the Dean of Arts and Humanities
  • the Associate Vice-President, Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
  • the Chair of Media Studies (recused if submitting a proposal)
  • Susie Caswell, Advancement Manager, Donor Relations (Advancement and Alumni Relations office)
  • an Arts and Humanities faculty member not from the Media Studies department (currently Dr. Daniel Burgoyne)
  • an alternate faculty member not from the Media Studies department (as needed).



A financial report will be required within one month of the conclusion of the funding period.

Additionally, all funded research projects will be profiled for both VIU and external audiences (where applicable). Consider gathering footage, images, and text during your work in preparation for development of the profile, with a particular focus in your work on student learning and community engagement.
