Student Research Scholarships & Awards

Research Support

Community Engagement

Research Grant/Contract Application Support:

  • Provide information on Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity funding
  • Support for faculty research applications
  • Review and drafting of research contracts
  • Develop, maintain and manage systems for post-award administration of research funding (i.e. establish cost centres, track reporting requirements, award announcements, database development and maintenance for all internal and external Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity grants and contracts)
  • Development and/or support on institutional research grant applications
  • Key liaison with funding agencies, the institution and faculty

Student Research Scholarships & Awards:

  • Provide support to students applying for undergraduate and graduate research scholarship applications (Tri-Agency research scholarships: NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC)
  • Develop, maintain and manage systems for pre and post-award administration of Tri-Agency research scholarships and awards (i.e. organize selection meetings, disseminate scholarship information to internal VIU committees and students, open and maintain cost centres, track reporting requirements, award announcements, database development and maintenance for all scholarship activity)
  • Development and/or support student institutional research grants/awards
  • Key liaison with funding agencies, the institution and students

Research Support:

  • Coordinate support for IP and protection of new inventions
  • Provide support to institutional committees (VIU Research Awards Committee, VIUFA Leave Committee, Scholarship Committees, miscellaneous research committees)
  • Promote awareness of VIU’s Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
  • Plan and coordinate professional development activities for faculty research and scholarly activity (i.e. workshops, seminars, retreats, conferences)
  • Responsible for ensuring the institution complies with reporting requirements of research funding agencies
  • Institutional office responsible for overseeing ongoing compliance with the Tri-Council Memorandum of Understanding (i.e. research ethics, financial management, reporting)
  • Provision of short-term workspace for researchers and research assistants

Community Engagement

  • We will help to identify potential partners for your project and help to support knowledge mobilization initiatives that provide benefits to both local communities and VIU. Please contact Tanis Dagert, Community Liaison Officer
  • Facilitate connections with community groups, government, non-profit organizations, business, funding agencies, and educational institutions for community-based applied research opportunities and other activities
  • Promote community engaged scholarship activities among the VIU community (e.g. Lunch & Learn Speaker series)
