  • 2 students awarded a NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS). The CGS is offered to the top-ranked applicants at each level (master’s and doctoral) and the next tier of meritorious applicants are offered an NSERC PGS.

Highlights

In 2007 VIU's research strategy focused on two key areas: building on our strengths focusing on coastal resources and communities of British Columbia.� Most of our research highlights reflect this strategy:

  • AquaPort � Mobilizing Aquaculture Knowledge, AquaPort as a Semantic Web.� This project has now spun off into a non-profit society.
  • KIS � Knowledge in Society, Reaching Out to Rural Communities: Tourism Research Innovation Partnership is fully underway developing case studies, videos, FAQs, and how-to manuals as part of their research dissemination for small rural communities.
  • Dr. Grant Murray started his tenure as a Canada Research Chair in Coastal Resource Management in the Institute for Coastal Research
  • Matching funds were received to help establish the BC Regional Innovation Endowed Chair in Aboriginal Early Childhood Development and we are actively recruiting a Chair candidate
  • Vancouver Island University is the lead institution in a Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) international project on Undergraduate Research and will be the first Canadian site for Council on Undergraduate Research Institute in June 2008.
